2026 Lithium Battery Market Review – Strong Growth Across the Board

2026-08-13

The first half of 2026 has been an exciting period for the lithium battery industry. If you have been following the news, you have probably seen headlines about record-breaking shipment numbers. But what do these numbers actually mean for the industry? And more importantly, what do they mean for you as a customer?

Let us take a closer look at the key trends and data from the first half of 2026.

Record-Breaking Shipment Numbers

The numbers are truly impressive. According to data from GGII (Gaogong Industry Research Institute), China's lithium battery shipments reached about 1.2 TWh in the first half of 2026, growing more than 50% compared to the same period last year. This is the first time that half-year shipments have crossed the 1 TWh mark.

Breaking this down further, power batteries for electric vehicles remained the largest segment. Domestic power battery shipments reached about 630 GWh, growing over 30% year-on-year. The commercial vehicle market played a big role here. New energy commercial vehicle sales exceeded 500,000 units in the first half, with growth of over 40%. New energy heavy trucks alone sold more than 120,000 units, growing over 65%.

But the real star of the show has been energy storage batteries.

Energy Storage – The Fastest Growing Segment

Energy storage battery shipments grew even faster than power batteries. China's energy storage battery shipments reached about 485 GWh in the first half of 2026, growing over 80% year-on-year. This growth is being driven by both domestic and international demand.

On the domestic side, energy storage demand is expanding from grid-side projects to a wider range of applications. On the international side, subsidy policies in Australia, the Middle East, and Europe have triggered a rush of overseas orders.

Looking at the global picture, SNE Research reported that global lithium-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) shipments reached 461.3 GWh in the first half of 2026, up 71% from 269.7 GWh in the same period of 2025.

A More Diverse Global Market

One interesting trend is that the global energy storage market is becoming more balanced. While China remains the largest single market with 202.5 GWh shipped (up 49% year-on-year), its share of the global market dropped from 50.5% to 43.9%.

Why? Because other regions are growing even faster. North America grew 83% to 75.9 GWh, Europe grew 74% to 72.7 GWh, and "other regions" (including the Middle East and Australia) grew 119% to 110.1 GWh. For the first time, non-China markets accounted for more than half of global ESS shipments.

This is an important signal for battery suppliers and buyers alike. Supply chain stability, local production capacity, and regulatory compliance are becoming just as important as price when choosing a supplier.

Different Applications, Different Growth Rates

Looking at different applications, grid-scale energy storage remains the largest segment at 347.0 GWh, accounting for 75.2% of total shipments. But two other segments are growing even faster.

Commercial and industrial (C&I) energy storage grew 59% to 39.6 GWh. Residential energy storage was the real standout, more than doubling from 20.9 GWh to 47.7 GWh – a 128% increase. Residential storage's market share rose from 7.7% to 10.3%.

What This Means for Howell Energy and Our Customers
